The famed Volcanoes National Park serves as the focal point of almost all Rwandan tours and safaris, although many of these excursions also take in parts of neighboring Uganda due to Rwanda’s strong physical and ecological links to that nation.
Other outstanding wildlife areas in Rwanda, including the primate-rich Nyungwe Forest National Park, provide fantastic chimpanzee and birding safaris that pair well with a hike to the Volcanoes National Park gorillas.

This nation is distinguished by its astounding biodiversity, volcanoes, and highland rainforests that are gorillas’ natural habitat. A Rwanda gorilla trekking safari pairs nicely with other East African locations like Uganda, Kenya, or Tanzania because it is rarely seen alone.
More than meets the eye, Rwanda’s lush and mountainous landscape is home to the primate-rich Nyungwe Forest National Park, where rambunctious chimpanzees play and the sky are crowded with a wide variety of birds.
Additionally, Akagera National Park in low-lying eastern Rwanda offers big game viewing in a diversified savannah environment with safari heavyweights like lions and elephants.
Take an early breakfast at your lodge, then leave with a packed lunch for the park headquarters for a required briefing on the laws and regulations to adhere to while on the hike.
Depending on their movements in their native environment, the trek to find these “Gentle Giants” may take 1–7 hours. Once you find them, the excitement of running into the gorillas in the jungle blots out all the unpleasant memories of your unsuccessful quest.
The work is worthwhile! You are permitted to spend up to 60 minutes with the gorillas, take pictures, films, and selfies as you watch the baby gorillas swing from a tree and feed the adults.
The world’s best primate tracking may be found in Rwanda, which is surrounded by undulating hills, dense forests, and imposing mountain peaks.
Rwanda is home to more than half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the world, so it makes sense that most wildlife lovers travel there to follow and see these critically endangered animals up close.
The late Dian Fossey spent 20 years observing the endangered mountain gorillas on the bamboo-covered slopes of Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes, and the filmmakers who captured Gorillas in the Mist also spent time there.
