Tsavo Kenya Overview

Combined, Tsavo East and Tsavo West make Kenya’s biggest park, one of the world’s largest game sanctuaries. Despite this, the parks have a lower population of wildlife and difficult to spot the animals in the dense acacia.

Tsavo is situated in the east of Kenya, halfway between Nairobi and the coast. It is a beautiful, wild and hot place that retains a lot of its original splendor. The West is better for big five viewing as the east ranks higher for localized antelope and bird species associated with northern Kenya.

One of the most special reasons Tsavo East is known for is the sights of the soil-covered, rusty-red elephants and the captivating landscapes. Tsavo gained a reputation as home of the “man eating lions” when, in the late 1800s, several construction workers were killed by hungry lions as they built the railway from Mombasa to Uganda. Today, it’s known for less frightening reasons, like the spectacle that is Mzima Springs: icy clear water flowing rapidly from under a lava rock, as well as the Shetani Lava Flows. Expect to see the ‘Big 5′ as well as a huge range of bird and plant species. Aside of enjoying the views and wildlife on offer, Tsavo West provides a magnificent rock climbing adventure with a range of sheer cliffs.

Tsavo and neighbouring Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary are all served by a selection of upmarket lodges and camps.
